Geniza Lab

Possibly an official document in Arabic script, but the hand is crude. Could also be an IOU with a layout reminiscent of state documents. Concerns a debt (two qirats?) owed by Abū Saʿīd al-Ḥarīrī on account of something to do with an account for a diwan. Dated: Jumādā I 594 AH = 1198 CE. ابو سعيد الحريري ما عليه... الديوان عن عجل حساب... في ... المستخدمين(؟) قيراطين وكتب بتاريخ جمادى الاول سنة اربع وتسعين وخمسمائة

State document, fragment of a longer text, dismembered at the collesis. What has remained is wa-mā tawfīqī illā bi-l-lāh. Possibly Ayyubid (tawfīqī billāh was an Ayyubid ʿalāma).

Report to an Ayyubid official mentioning al-Malik al-ʿĀdil and a deceased official named Shams al-Dīn. The Mainz shelfmark is how it's listed in FGP, but it's not actually in Mainz. The image in FGP is from a microfilm at the National Library of Israel; the original was at a paper museum in Mainz that has since closed, now presumed lost. Join: Marina Rustow.

Letter (?), left half only, narrow folds like a letter, mentioning quantities of something and a certain Nūr al-Dīn, so maybe Ayyubid?

Recto: Letter from ʿAlī b. [...] addressed to Sharaf al-Dīn apparently requesting clarification of a decree. Full address (unclear where Baker/Polliack got this from): al-malik al-muʿaẓẓam Sharaf al-Dīn, Ayyubid Sultan of Damascus (1218-27?). - needs examination. Verso: Hebrew pen trials, citing Mishna Berakhot 4:7. Also citing Isaac Kinzi's poem יום באתם לחלות (see Davidson, Otzar ha-piyyut, X, no, 1633). Written by Nadiv b. Yiṣḥaq, who signed his name. In the left margin, accounts in Arabic script and Greek/Coptic numerals, probably unrelated to recto. (FGP and AA)

Ayyubid chronicle. The time-span covered in the fragment is A.H. 522-573 (= 1128-78 C.E.). - needs examination.
